Mobile Telephones in Japan

Japan has/had its own, very specific, 2G mobile phone system. European or American (or other Asian) 2G mobile phones do NOT work in Japan.

Most 3G-handsets work in Japan on condition that your provider has a roaming agreement with Japan.

3G coverage in Japan is excellent.
2G is gradually being phased out and service will probably be completely discontinued in 2010.

You can rent Japanese mobile phones at Narita airport or Kansai International airport. You normally have the choice to have your original mobile phone number forwarded to the rented handset. (For doing so, you need your original SIM-card and you need to insert it in the rented phone.)
